What is verification, and what does it confirm?
Verification is a check by an outside party that sums, a report or a declaration are right. People often mix it up with validation and assurance, but each means something else: we explain the differences in a separate article. The goal is to check that the document meets the right standard. The scope must fit, the input data must be complete, and the method and the reading of the results must be correct.
Checking is not the same as calculating. To calculate, you list the sources of emissions or impact. To verify, an outside party checks that these sums are right and meet the standard. You need both steps for reports people trust.
A checked document shows that the data is reliable, complete and open. This matters to your managers, partners, investors and regulators, and to EPD programmes and ESG rating platforms.
