Definition

What is a decarbonisation strategy?

A decarbonisation strategy is a full plan to cut your company's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. It covers your own sites and your value chain.

It starts from your real emissions and sets targets that you can reach over time. The strategy must fit your company, your business and your energy needs.

Many companies use the method of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). It sets climate targets in line with the Paris Agreement and net zero.

Not every company has to send its targets for checking at once. But real action to cut emissions in Scopes 1, 2 and 3 gives you an edge. It also gets you ready for new rules, such as the CSRD and the EU Fit for 55 package.

Approach

How do we prepare a decarbonisation strategy?

We start with your corporate carbon footprint in Scopes 1 and 2, and often also Scope 3. It shows your real emissions and the areas where you can cut the most.

Based on this, we set reduction targets that match the needs of your company and your business partners. The targets should be ambitious but reachable in the long term, for example by 2030 or 2050.

Next, we look at climate risks. Physical risks are, for example, extreme weather. Other risks come from new rules, new technology and the market. You see how climate change affects your company.

The last step is a set of scenarios to cut CO₂ emissions. They cover energy, saving energy, changes in how you work and work with suppliers. You get one action map for your investment decisions.

Process

How do we build your decarbonisation strategy step by step?

01

We calculate your corporate carbon footprint in all three scopes under the GHG Protocol.

02

We set realistic and measurable targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

03

We assess climate risks and opportunities in light of current rules, technology and the market.

04

We build scenarios to cut emissions: choice of technology, better processes and work with suppliers.

05

Summary meeting: we present our advice, cost scenarios (CAPEX and OPEX) and a schedule.

06

Optional: we submit your targets to the Science Based Targets initiative for formal validation.

07

You put the strategy into practice. We monitor progress and update the plans.

Benefits

Why put a decarbonisation strategy in place?

Cutting emissions brings your company real benefits for the climate and for business:

Compliance

The strategy helps you meet legal and reporting duties on greenhouse gas emissions.

Cost savings

You use less energy and fewer raw materials in the long term.

Energy security

More energy sources and less dependence on fossil fuels.

Stronger position

Better results in tenders and higher sustainability ratings, for example CDP and EcoVadis.

Better climate risk management

You are ready for changing energy prices and new rules.

A good strategy also makes your company ready for climate change.

Our support

How does EXERGY help companies cut emissions and reach SBTi targets?

We support you in the whole process: from emissions and targets to real solutions and reporting. We use the SBTi method and help you on the way to climate neutrality and a stronger market position.

The strategy is more than a legal duty. It is an investment in your company's future and in how you compete.

FAQ

What to know about SBTi before you start

Frequently asked questions.

1. Where does a decarbonisation strategy start?+
The first step is to collect data and calculate your corporate carbon footprint in Scopes 1, 2 and 3. You then see where your largest emissions are. On this basis, you plan reduction actions and set the strategy.
2. What should a good decarbonisation strategy include?+
It shows where your emissions come from and sets clear targets based on science. It has an action plan that fits your company and checks the risks of each technology. It also has a way to track and report progress.
3. What business benefits does a decarbonisation strategy bring?+
Besides lower emissions and meeting the rules, the strategy helps you cut energy costs. It also helps you see and reduce climate risks.
4. How long does it take to prepare a decarbonisation strategy?+
It depends on the size of your company and how complex it is. Most often it takes from about 12 weeks to several months. The strategy is not a one-off document. You need to review and update it regularly.
5. Are emission reduction targets the same for every company?+
No. Targets should fit your sector, your business and what is technically possible for you. But they must stay in line with global climate guidance, for example the Paris Agreement and SBTi.
6. How does a decarbonisation strategy affect relations with customers and suppliers?+
International companies expect their partners to cut emissions and report their carbon footprint. The strategy helps you meet these requirements and makes your position in the value chain stronger.
7. How do you monitor the strategy?+
You measure emissions often and compare them with your targets. You use known standards, such as the GHG Protocol. Regular reports show your progress, so you can change course in time.
8. Does a decarbonisation strategy need large investments?+
It depends, mainly on your sector. You can start with better processes and saving energy. Investments in green energy, new equipment or new technology come later. See the costs as an investment. Over time, it saves money and lowers risk.
9. What if a company has no Scope 1 and 2 emissions? Can it still set SBTi targets?+
Yes. In this case, SBTi asks for a plan to keep emissions at zero until the target year, for example 2030. You need to show that you monitor your processes and prevent new emission sources. Your reduction targets then focus mainly on Scope 3.
