Definition

What is LCA report verification, and what does it confirm?

LCA report verification is an independent check of a product's life cycle assessment (LCA) by a third party. It confirms that the report meets ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. The scope must be right, the input data complete and the impact results correct. The result is a verification statement that shows the report can be trusted.

An LCA is the core of every Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), and an EPD needs a checked LCA. EPDs are now often required in EU public tenders, green building (BREEAM, LEED) and global supply chains. For these uses, an LCA without an outside check has no formal value.

The check confirms that the method meets the ISO standards, the results are right and the input data is reliable. We look at ISO 14040/14044, the choice of LCA database and the data from raw materials to end of life. We also check that the impact results can be trusted.

Who it is for

Who needs LCA report verification?

You need it if you prepare EPDs under EN 15804 or ISO 14025. This covers makers of building products, chemicals, packaging, electronics and consumer goods. In all these sectors, the EPD is becoming the standard way to talk about the environment.

EU rules use life cycle data more and more. Examples are the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) with its Digital Product Passport, and green public tenders. Companies in public tenders and companies that export need a reliable LCA, checked by an independent third party.

It also helps if you did an LCA in-house or with a consultant. You can check it before you publish an EPD, share it with customers or use it in ESG reports. Investors now often ask for documents checked by an outside party.

Process

How does LCA verification work, step by step?

At EXERGY, the check has three stages:

01

Document review

We review the LCA report, the system boundaries, the functional unit, the method and the LCA databases (for example ecoinvent or GaBi). We find areas that need more data or a change of method.

02

Detailed check of the sums

We check the fit with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 and with the product category rules (PCR). We check that the data covers all life cycle stages and that the results (CO₂, GWP, AP, EP and others) are right.

03

Verification statement

A detailed report with the results and a statement that the LCA meets the ISO standards. You can use it for an EPD, in ESG reports, tender files and green claims.

The whole check takes 2 to 6 weeks, depending on how complex the LCA is.

Input data

What data do we need for the check?

Project documents
—LCA report (full document)
—System description, system boundaries and functional unit
—Standards used and the PCR of the EPD programme
—Name and version of the LCA software (SimaPro, GaBi, OpenLCA)
—Database used (ecoinvent, GaBi, Ökobaudat)
Inventory data
—Raw material and material use
—Energy data (electricity, heat, fuels)
—Transport data (weight, distance, transport mode)
—Emissions and waste from production
—Data for the use stage and end of life (recycling, disposal)
Results and method
—Inventory (LCI) and impact (LCIA) results
—Factors used to turn data into results (GWP, AP, EP and others)
—How you read the results, and a sensitivity analysis
—Record of assumptions and shortcuts
—Earlier versions of the report (if we check an update)
Benefits

What are the benefits of LCA report verification?

A checked LCA report has real business value:

A credible declaration

A check by an independent third party gives the report a status that EPD programmes, banks and EU tender bodies accept. Your claims rest on data, not guesses.

Access to an EPD

A checked LCA lets you get an EPD, a key document in green public tenders and in BREEAM and LEED. It opens markets where such declarations are a tender rule.

A basis for cutting emissions

Checked LCA data gives you a solid basis to cut CO₂ and improve your product's results, in line with the standards.

A competitive edge

You can stand out by sharing checked results, not just your own statements.

Why us

Why work with EXERGY?

Independent and compliant

We check LCA reports under ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. EPD programmes and certification bodies in Poland and Europe accept our statements.

Impartial

We do not check an LCA that EXERGY prepared or helped with, and we do not sell checks in a package with consulting.

Strong track record

We have done LCA studies and checks since 2017. Many specialists on the market trained with us.

On time

In 2024, we finished 65 of 74 projects ahead of schedule.

Team

Meet the team

Experienced EXERGY specialists run every project with our own proven methods. We do not give consulting work to subcontractors. We have worked in this field since 2017.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about LCA

Does every LCA need a check?+
A check is mandatory for LCA reports behind an EPD (ISO 14025, EN 15804). Many green building schemes (BREEAM, LEED) and some EU-funded tenders also require it.
What is an LCA report?+
An LCA report records the life cycle study of a product. It sets out the scope, the input data and the impact results. It also explains how to read them, in line with ISO 14040/14044.
How long does the check take?+
Usually 2 to 6 weeks, depending on how complex the product is and how complete the files are.
What if the check finds problems?+
We show you what is wrong and help the authors of the report fix it. A check takes several rounds. We care about your final success, not just about pointing out errors.
Is a product carbon footprint (PCF) the same as an LCA?+
A PCF is a simpler form of LCA that looks only at greenhouse gases (the carbon footprint). A full LCA also covers other impacts: water use, eutrophication, acidification and more.
