Definition

What is verification of transport carbon footprint calculations?

We check, as an independent third party, that the greenhouse gas emissions from your shipments and hubs were worked out in line with ISO 14083. We do the check under ISO 14064-3. A verified result makes your data more credible to customers, tender buyers and companies that use it in their Scope 3.

Checking is not the same as calculating. To calculate, you collect shipment data and turn it into tonnes of CO₂e. To verify, an outside party checks that the sums are complete, correct and meet the criteria.

Who it is for

Who needs this check?

It matters most for:

—

carriers and logistics firms that give customers shipment emissions in offers or reports,

—

forwarders that collect data from subcontractors,

—

shippers that use transport data in Scope 3 (categories 4 and 9) or in a product footprint,

—

companies in tenders where transport emissions count.

Before we take the job, we agree who will use the result. We also check what they need: the criteria, the level of assurance and the type of verification body. So you know from the start if our work fits your needs.

Assurance

Levels of assurance

ISO 14064-3 has two levels of assurance. They differ in the depth of the work and the form of the conclusion, not in “quality”. The user of the result sets the level. If they do not, we agree it with you before we start.

01

Limited assurance

A review of documents, data analysis and our own recalculation of key values. The conclusion is negative in form: “nothing suggests that the sums do not meet ISO 14083”. This is the default level.

02

Reasonable assurance

A wider check of source data, such as fuel use and cargo weights. The conclusion is positive in form: “the sums meet ISO 14083 in all material respects”. It works well for actual data over a closed period, such as a carrier's annual report.

Process

How does the check work?

We work as auditors under ISO 14064-3, in three main stages:

01

Document review

We review the report, the shipment data and the assumptions: the limits of the transport chain, the legs, the hubs and the data sources.

02

Checking the sums

We check the fit with ISO 14083 and the choice of emission factors and modelled data. We also redo key values ourselves.

03

Verification statement

We issue a verification statement with the conclusion, findings and advice. You can give it to a customer or attach it to an offer.

We can check sums for shipments already made and for sums made before the shipments. The statement always sets out the scope, so the reader knows exactly what we checked.

Input data

What data do we need?

Well-prepared files make the check faster.

Data we need
—Transport carbon footprint report
—Description of the transport chain: routes, legs and hubs
—Shipment data: cargo weight, distances, transport modes
—Fuel or energy use, if measured
—Sources of emission factors and a note on modelled data
—Data from subcontractors, if relevant
Benefits

What are the benefits of this check?

A checked transport footprint has real business value:

Customer trust

Shippers and partners get emissions data checked by an outside party, with a clear scope and level of assurance.

An edge in tenders

A result checked by an outside party helps you win where CO₂e counts in the choice of carrier.

Better Scope 3 data

Your customers can use the checked data in Scope 3 categories 4 and 9 without checking the method again.

Ready for new rules

A check against ISO 14083 now shows the gaps before the CountEmissionsEU rules. From 2 December 2030, these will cover companies that give shipment emissions.

Lower risk

An outside check of your sums lowers the risk of greenwashing claims when you talk about low-emission transport.

Why us

Why work with EXERGY?

Verification under ISO 14064-3

Criteria: ISO 14083. The statement gives the scope, the level of assurance and the materiality threshold, so the reader knows what we checked.

Independence

We do not check sums made by EXERGY or related parties. Our fee does not depend on the result.

Strong track record

We have worked on carbon footprints and checks since 2017. Many specialists on the market trained with us.

On time

88% of projects finished ahead of schedule (2025 data).

Team

Meet the team

Experienced EXERGY specialists run every project with our own proven methods. We do not give consulting work to subcontractors. We have worked in this field since 2017.

How we work

How do we work with you?

01

First call

You talk to our specialist. We agree who will use the result, the goal and scope, the criteria (ISO 14083), the level of assurance and the list of documents. We confirm there is no conflict of interest.

02

Proposal

Within one working day, we send you a proposal with the scope, schedule and price.

03

Checking the sums

We follow the plan: risk and materiality, a review of source data, our own recalculations and a list of findings to explain.

04

Verification statement

After the independent review, we issue the verification statement with the conclusion, findings and advice.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about transport carbon footprint verification

Is transport carbon footprint verification mandatory?+
There is no general legal duty today. A customer, a tender buyer or a contract can require it. From 2 December 2030, the CountEmissionsEU rules (Regulation (EU) 2026/1030) will require a check for some companies. These are firms other than SMEs that give customers the emissions of specific shipments.
Is this the verification required by CountEmissionsEU?+
No. Under Regulation (EU) 2026/1030, accredited conformity assessment bodies do the checks, and its rules apply from 2 December 2030. Our check is voluntary and follows ISO 14064-3. It lets you see that your ISO 14083 sums are correct and complete before the new rules apply.
Can EXERGY verify calculations that its own team made?+
No. We do not check reports, analyses or statements that EXERGY or related parties prepared or helped with. In that case, you need another verifier.
Can you verify calculations before the shipment takes place?+
Yes. In that case, we check sums based on planned or modelled data. When the report gets actual data after the shipments, the new result needs a new check.
What is the difference between calculating and verifying a transport carbon footprint?+
To calculate, you collect shipment data and turn it into emissions under ISO 14083. To verify, a third party checks that these sums are complete, correct and meet the standard.
