Definition

What is an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration)?

An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a verified document that shows how a product affects the environment over its whole life cycle.

An EPD is based on a life cycle assessment (LCA). It covers the key stages: raw materials, transport, production, use, and disposal, recycling or reuse.

With an EPD, you can compare products, meet the rules of building projects and show your climate impact openly.

We prepare EPDs under ISO 14025 and EN 15804, the most used standards for this. An EPD is a Type III environmental declaration. Ecolabels are Type I, and self-declared environmental claims are Type II.

An EPD is split into these stages and modules:

@alt: EPD modules across the product life cycle: A1–A3 product stage, A4–A5 construction process, B1–B7 use stage, C1–C4 end of life and D beyond the system boundary
Why

Why prepare an EPD for your product?

Your customers ask for an EPD

Laws in the Nordic countries and green building schemes call for EPDs.

Tenders and purchasing rules

Many EU-funded projects ask for EPDs for the materials they use.

Getting ready for the DPP

Your product's impact on the environment will be a required part of the Digital Product Passport.

BREEAM / LEED / WELL

An EPD is a key input to green building ratings.

Getting ready for ESG and CSRD

Investors, banks and regulators ask for data.

Transparency

An EPD shows openly how your products affect the environment.

Input data

What data do we need to prepare an EPD?

Good data collection makes the project run smoothly.

Data we need
—Materials and packaging used in production
—Transport of these materials
—Products made
—Energy used in production
—Waste from production
Team

Process

How do we work with you?

We keep the project on track. This is how we prepare your EPD:

Week 0–1

Project start

—We agree the scope and goal of the project
—Kick-off meeting
Weeks 2–4

Analysis

—Data collection
—Data check
—Data corrections, if needed
—LCA calculations
—Document layout and design
—Draft EPD
Weeks 2–3

EPD verification

—We send the report to the verifier
—We work with the verifier on any questions
—Final version approved
Week 1

Project close

—We go through the final EPD with you
—EPD publication

Comparison

What is the difference between an EPD and a product carbon footprint?

CriterionProduct carbon footprintEPD
ScopeOnly greenhouse gas emissions, such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄).A wide set of data: greenhouse gases, energy use, natural resources, pollution, effects on human health and more.
MethodBased on life cycle assessmentBased on life cycle assessment
ComparabilityWorks for any product, but results are often hard to compare between products. Results can be compared between products of the same category that follow the same product category rules (PCR).

FAQ

What to know about EPDs before you start

Frequently asked questions.

1. What are the benefits of an EPD for your product?+
An EPD lets you talk about your product's impact on the environment with facts. An independent verifier checks the data, so people trust it. You meet the growing expectations of customers and partners. You get ready for new legal duties, such as mandatory LCA in construction. And you stand out from competitors who have no such documents.
2. How often do you need to update an EPD?+
An EPD is usually valid for 5 years. After that, you need to update it and have it checked again. If your production process, materials or energy sources change a lot before then, update the EPD earlier. The data then shows the real impact of your product.
3. How is a product carbon footprint different from an EPD?+
A carbon footprint shows greenhouse gas emissions, so only part of the impact. An EPD is based on a full life cycle assessment of the product. It shows a whole set of indicators: CO₂ emissions, use of raw materials, acidification, eutrophication and more. So an EPD gives a fuller and comparable picture of the environmental impact.
4. How long does it take to prepare an EPD?+
It depends on the programme operator and on the quality of your data. With the International EPD System, the process usually takes 6–8 weeks. With Polish programme operators, it can take up to 9 months, mostly because of verifier availability and procedures.
5. How is the International EPD System different from other programmes?+
The International EPD System is one of the largest EPD programmes and a member of ECO Platform. An EPD registered there is accepted across Europe and in many markets outside Europe. In practice, it is better known and easier to use in projects and tenders abroad.
6. Must an EPD be verified?+
No law requires an EPD for every product yet. But if you want other countries to accept and compare your EPD, a verifier must check it and a known programme operator must register it. Otherwise, it is only an internal study, not an official EPD.
7. What data do you need to prepare an EPD?+
The key data is energy and fuel use, and the materials, semi-finished products and packaging you use. We also need logistics data: transport of raw materials and products. Then waste and recycling, refrigerants and process emissions.
8. How can an EPD support sales and business growth?+
Many tenders ask for an EPD, especially in construction and infrastructure. Large companies and investors choose suppliers who can document the environmental impact of their products. So an EPD is more than a formal requirement. It is a real market advantage in talks with customers and partners.
9. What is EN 15804+A2, and does my EPD need to follow it?+
EN 15804+A2 is the European standard with the rules for EPDs of construction products. It defines the life cycle modules: A1–A3 production, A4–A5 construction, B use, C end of life and D benefits beyond the system boundary. It also sets the mandatory indicators, such as GWP-total, GWP-fossil and GWP-biogenic. Since 2022, EPD programmes accept new declarations only under +A2. Older +A1 declarations stay valid only until they expire. If your product goes to the construction market, EN 15804+A2 is a must in practice. We prepare all EPDs under EN 15804+A2 and ISO 14025.
10. What does ISO 14025 cover for environmental declarations?+
ISO 14025 is the base standard for Type III declarations. It sets the rules for EPD programmes, for independent checks and for how results are reported. EN 15804 adds detailed rules for construction products. So a complete EPD of a construction product should follow both standards.
