Talk to us about checking your product's carbon footprint.

Definition

What is product carbon footprint verification?

Product carbon footprint verification is a check by an independent third party. It confirms that the greenhouse gas emissions over your product's life are calculated correctly. We check that the footprint follows the GHG Protocol and ISO 14067. A verified footprint shows that the data is reliable, complete and open. This matters to your managers, partners and customers, and when you prepare an EPD.

Checking is not the same as calculating. To calculate a product footprint, you study the emissions over the life cycle (LCA). To verify it, an outside party checks that the sums are correct and meet the standard. You need both steps to talk about your product's impact in a way people trust.

Who it is for

Who needs product carbon footprint verification?

It matters most for:

—

manufacturers preparing EPDs that need checked emissions data,

—

suppliers to global customers who ask for a documented product footprint,

—

companies that share their product footprint with customers and consumers,

—

companies in tenders where the product footprint is one of the criteria.

Rules and customer demands keep growing. So checked product footprints are becoming the norm.

Process

How does product carbon footprint verification work?

At EXERGY, the check has three stages:

01

Document review

Our team reviews the emissions data over the product's whole life: raw materials, transport, production, use and disposal.

02

Checking the calculations

We check that the method meets ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol. We check that the input data is accurate, complete and correct.

03

Verification report

We issue a report with the results. You can use it for an EPD, in files for your customers and for certification schemes.

We check emissions within the agreed boundaries: cradle to gate or cradle to grave. A reliable report is the key sign of a good process.

Input data

What data do we need?

Well-prepared files make the check faster.

Data we need
—Product carbon footprint report
—Calculation method and life cycle boundaries
—List of materials, raw materials and packaging
—Transport of raw materials and products
—Energy and fuel used in production
—Use and disposal of the product, if relevant
Benefits

What are the benefits of verifying your product carbon footprint?

A checked product footprint has real business value:

Credibility and trust

Customers and partners can trust that your product emissions data is reliable and meets ISO 14067.

A step towards an EPD

Checked carbon data makes it easier to prepare an EPD, which covers the full life cycle study of the product.

An edge in tenders

A documented product footprint, checked by an outside party, helps you win tenders where CO₂ is a criterion.

A basis for cutting emissions

A reliable study shows the stages of the product's life with the largest impact and helps you plan actions that work.

Lower risk

An outside check of your work protects you from the risk of greenwashing and damage to your reputation.

Why us

Why work with EXERGY?

Independent and compliant

We check product footprints against ISO 14067 and the GHG Protocol. Customers and EPD programmes accept our reports.

Impartial

We do not verify a footprint that EXERGY calculated or helped with, and we do not sell verification in a package with consulting.

Strong track record

We have done carbon footprint work and checks since 2017. Many specialists on the market trained with us.

On time

In 2024, we finished 65 of 74 projects ahead of schedule.

Team

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about product carbon footprint verification

Is product carbon footprint verification mandatory?+
No law requires a third-party check. But customers and partners trust checked data more. An EPD has its own check: the programme's verifier reviews the full life cycle study.
What is the difference between a product carbon footprint and its verification?+
To calculate a product footprint, you study the emissions over the life cycle (LCA). To verify it, a third party checks that the sums are complete and correct under ISO 14067.
How long does product carbon footprint verification take?+
It depends on how complex the product is and how easy it is to get the documents. It usually takes 2 to 6 weeks.
Is verification a one-off?+
Repeat the check when the recipe, suppliers, technology or study boundaries change. For an EPD, the period set by the programme applies.
