What is SSbD?
SSbD (Safe and Sustainable by Design) is an EU framework for checking and designing chemicals and materials. It helps firms make products that are safer and greener over their whole life. The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) wrote it.
SSbD helps you make design choices early, before a recipe, material, process or technology goes to large scale. It does not replace REACH, CLP, LCA or EPD. It brings them together in one clear model for decisions.

Scoping: what exactly we assess, why, for what goal and within which limits.
Safety: hazards, exposure and risk. We look at physical and chemical properties, toxicity to people and nature, how people are exposed, emissions and end of life.
Environment: based on LCA and covering the whole life cycle, from raw materials and production to use and end of life.
Cost and society: life cycle costs, risks from critical raw materials and how weak the supply chain is to shocks.
Trade-offs: a design choice should not rest on one figure only, such as CO₂e.
Record of the decision: the data, assumptions, system limits and criteria behind the assessment.
