Definition

What is EPD verification, and what does it confirm?

EPD verification is an independent check of an Environmental Product Declaration before it is published. ISO 14025 says a third party must check every Type III declaration. Only after a positive result can the EPD programme publish it and give it a number.

The verifier checks the EPD against the product category rules (PCR). The verifier also checks the LCA report behind it (for building products, against EN 15804). The data must be complete and good, and the stated results must be right. This is where EPD projects most often get stuck. Data errors or gaps against the PCR mean more rounds and weeks of delay.

We help companies on both sides of this process. We check EPDs and the LCA reports behind them as an independent third party. We also prepare EPDs so that they pass the programme's check the first time. Read more about who can check and publish EPDs in our article on choosing an EPD programme operator.

Who it is for

Who needs EPD verification?

Mainly makers of building products, for whom an EPD under EN 15804 is now standard. Investors, BREEAM, LEED and green public tenders ask for it. The packaging, chemicals, furniture and electronics sectors now also ask for checked EPDs.

This is for you if you have a draft EPD or an LCA report. You can check it before you send it to the programme. This saves you the risk of rejection and costly rounds of changes. It works for EPDs made in-house and by outside consultants.

It is also for companies that update an expiring EPD (an EPD usually lasts 5 years). The same goes for moving an EPD to another programme. You can be sure your files meet the new programme's rules.

Process

How does EPD verification work, step by step?

At EXERGY, the check has three stages:

01

EPD and PCR review

We review the draft EPD against the PCR and the rules of the target programme. We check the scope, the life cycle modules (A1–A3, C, D) and that all required facts are there.

02

Check of the LCA report

We check the LCA behind the EPD. We look at EN 15804 and ISO 14040/44, the input data and the databases. We check the results (GWP, AP, EP and others) and that they match the EPD.

03

Verification report

You get a report with our comments and a statement that the EPD complies. We help with the fixes and stay with you through the programme's process, until the EPD is published and has a number.

The check usually takes 2 to 5 weeks. It depends on how complex the product is and how complete the files are.

Input data

What files do we need for EPD verification?

EPD and programme
—Draft EPD (for verification)
—Target EPD programme and the PCR that applies
—Scope of the EPD and declared modules (A1–A3, C, D)
—Previous version of the EPD (for an update)
LCA report behind the EPD
—Full LCA report with system boundaries and declared unit
—Software and model version (SimaPro, GaBi, OpenLCA)
—Databases used (ecoinvent, Ökobaudat and others)
—LCI and LCIA results and interpretation with a sensitivity analysis
Production data
—Recipes and raw material use for the declared product
—Plant energy data and its allocation to the product
—Transport of raw materials and distribution of the product
—Waste, packaging and end-of-life scenarios
Benefits

What are the benefits of EPD verification?

A good check saves time and makes your EPD credible:

Publication without delays

An EPD checked before you send it passes the programme's check faster. You avoid weeks of fixes that delay publication and tenders.

In line with ISO 14025 and EN 15804

Independent proof that the EPD and its LCA report meet the standards and the PCR. This is the basis for green claims you can trust, without the risk of greenwashing.

Access to tenders and green building ratings

A published, verified EPD earns points in green public tenders and in BREEAM and LEED. Often, it is now a condition to take part, not an extra.

Reliable data

When you find errors in data or allocation early, the check goes smoothly. You also get reliable results to plan cuts and talk to customers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about EPD verification

Does every EPD need to be verified?+
Yes. ISO 14025 says a third party must check every Type III declaration before it is published. Without a positive result, the programme will not publish the EPD or give it a number.
Who can verify and publish EPDs?+
EPD programmes publish EPDs. Independent verifiers approved by these programmes check them. Read how to choose a programme and what verifiers must meet in our article “Who can verify and publish an EPD?”.
How long does EPD verification take?+
Our check usually takes 2–5 weeks. Then the programme needs time too. In total, plan to publish your EPD at least 2–3 months before the tender or rating that needs it.
What if the verification finds non-conformities?+
We show you exactly what needs to change and why: in the data, the sums or the EPD text. Then we help with the fixes. A check takes several rounds. Our goal is to get your EPD published, not just to point out errors.
How is EPD verification different from LCA report verification?+
An LCA report check covers only the life cycle study (ISO 14040/14044). An EPD check also covers ISO 14025, the PCR and the rules of the programme where the EPD will be published. The LCA report is the background, and the EPD is its official, published form.
