Where the client started

Many environmental projects, but no link to emissions.

The client is a large European maker of plastic packaging for cosmetics and food. Its board decided to put climate work in order for the whole company. The work had to be consistent, measured and based on recognised standards.

The first step was a footprint for Scopes 1 and 2. It soon became clear that this was only the start. In the next stages we added Scope 3, TCFD and an SBTi strategy. Then came a reduction plan and a CDP report.

—

There was no footprint for the whole company, and no full footprint for Scopes 1, 2 and 3.

—

The company ran environmental and product projects, but they were not linked to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

—

Customers asked more and more about the footprint of the packaging, about emission cuts and about SBTi and CDP.

—

Climate issues started to affect supplier ratings and loan terms. The company had no plan for the years ahead.

How we worked

Six stages, from own emissions to a CDP report.

01

Scopes 1 and 2: emissions from own operations

Reporting boundaries and a map of Scope 1 and 2 sources: fuels, utilities, vehicles, support systems and electricity.

02

Scope 3: the value chain

A map of Scope 3: raw materials, transport and energy in the supply chain. The calculation models are updated every year.

03

Climate risks (TCFD)

A study of physical and transition risks based on IPCC scenarios. It is now part of the company’s risk management.

04

Strategy and SBTi targets

Reduction targets for Scopes 1 and 2 and for Scope 3, in line with the temperature paths of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

05

Reduction plan

The strategy turned into actions in production, maintenance, logistics, purchasing and product design.

06

CDP “Climate change” report

Data, targets and risks came together in one questionnaire. The result was a B score.

What the numbers showed

Most emissions are in Scope 3.

Emissions from the company’s own operations are only part of the total. To cut the footprint of its products, the company must work on raw materials, transport and suppliers, not only on its own energy use.

Share of each scope in total emissions · for illustration
Scope 1: direct~12%
Scope 2: energy~16%
Scope 3: value chain~72%
What the client gained

A complete climate baseline that the data can support.

B
CDP score for “Climate change”, a very good result.
1·2·3
a complete footprint for Scopes 1, 2 and 3 for the whole company.
SBTi
a decarbonisation strategy with targets in line with SBTi guidance.
—

A reduction plan that turns targets into actions in production, logistics, purchasing and product design.

—

A climate risk study that is now part of the company’s risk management.

Scopes 1 and 2 are a good start, but only Scope 3 shows the full picture. In packaging, work at plant level is not enough. The company also needs to change materials and work with its suppliers.
