The EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 says some types of batteries sold in the EU need a carbon footprint declaration. These are electric vehicle (EV) batteries, batteries for light means of transport (LMT) and rechargeable industrial batteries above 2 kWh.
The dates depend on the battery type. They also depend on detailed EU rules (delegated and implementing acts). These set the calculation method, the format and how the check works. So before each project, we classify the product and check the latest dates.
This declaration is not a typical, voluntary LCA. It is a model set by law, made under detailed rules for each type of battery.
The result depends on material and production data. It also depends on how the battery works in use. Key factors are the energy it can deliver, the number of cycles, the depth of discharge and its state of health at end of life. To get it right, you need LCA skills, knowledge of the rules and a grasp of basic battery data.
The carbon footprint covers the main stages of the battery's life: raw materials, production, transport to customers, and end of life and recycling. The use stage is not counted as energy used, as in a normal product study. But how the battery works in use still matters, because the result is shown per unit of energy the battery delivers over its life. End of life follows the Environmental Footprint method and the rules for each battery type.
The first duties apply to EV batteries, once the detailed EU rules are in force.
The duty will cover rechargeable industrial batteries above 2 kWh. The exact scope and date depend on the battery type and the method.
Labels with carbon footprint classes: scope and date as set in the detailed EU rules.
From 18 February 2027, a digital passport will be required for EV batteries, LMT batteries and industrial batteries above 2 kWh.
The functional unit depends on the battery type. Cycling batteries are rated per total energy they deliver over their life. Backup batteries use a different basis. This choice shapes the whole study, so we fix it before we collect data. For new cell types, such as sodium-ion or solid-state cells, the default recycling models in the rules do not always fit. Getting first-hand data from new production lines also takes longer.
Key production steps need data from the actual maker, plant and battery model. You can use average data only where the method allows it and you record its quality.
The result comes with a formal rating of data quality. It shows how complete, reliable and typical the data in the model is.
We prepare the files for an independent check by the notified body, as part of the conformity assessment. EXERGY helps with the model, the report and the answers to the verifier. We do not replace the notified body.
Experienced EXERGY specialists run every project with our own proven methods. We do not give consulting work to subcontractors. We have worked in this field since 2017.
Meet the team →We run the whole process: scope, data, model, documents and contact with the verifier. We work closely with your engineers and your suppliers.
We set the battery type under the EU Battery Regulation, the method, the functional unit, the system boundaries and the data you need.
We collect data on the product, the plant and your suppliers. We check it is complete and find the gaps to fill before we build the model.
We build a model in line with the Environmental Footprint method and the rules for your battery type. We prepare the technical files, the carbon footprint result and the data quality rating.
We help you work with the notified body. We prepare answers to its questions and any extra files it needs.
Leave your details and our consultant will talk to you about the scope, dates and checks you need.
