A customer has asked you to publish your emissions on OpenClimat. It wants to see your Scopes 1, 2 and 3, your base year and your targets in one place. Its other suppliers will be there too. If you have never calculated your footprint, the request comes with a deadline you will find hard to meet.
- OpenClimat: an open platform where companies publish climate data for customers in the supply chain.
- Data: emissions in Scopes 1, 2 and 3, metrics per unit of output, the base year, the method and checks.
- Targets: your reduction targets and the path to them, including links to the SBTi.
- Preparation: a company carbon footprint under the GHG Protocol or ISO 14064 is the basis of your profile.
What is the OpenClimat platform?
OpenClimat is an open platform about the climate action of companies. It aims to show more clearly how companies affect the climate. It collects and shows data on emissions and other green metrics. By making data open, it helps companies act on climate together.
Why does it matter for climate action?
The platform helps companies measure their impact, find what to improve and plan how to cut emissions. Because you can compare results between companies, it pushes them to compete on climate goals. Large customers may also need such data for their duties under EU due diligence rules, such as the CSDDD.
How does OpenClimat work?
OpenClimat works as a central store for data on what a company does: energy use, transport, production and other sources of emissions. It works out the carbon footprint with recognised methods and emission factors. It shows the results clearly, so you can see where the impact is largest.
What data does OpenClimat collect?
Each year, companies report the main greenhouse gases: CO₂, methane (CH₄), nitrous oxide (N₂O) and F-gases. The data comes from energy use, raw materials and production.
Required information
- Scope 1 emissions: direct emissions from fuel burnt in sources the company owns or controls, such as boilers, vehicles and processes.
- Scope 2 emissions: emissions from making the electricity, heat, steam or cooling the company buys. We work them out as part of a corporate carbon footprint.
- Scope 3 emissions: other emissions in the value chain, such as goods you buy, transport, business travel, product use, waste and investments. We explain how to choose the Scope 3 categories that matter in a separate article.
- Total carbon footprint: the sum of all three scopes, in tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (t CO₂e).
- Emissions per unit: for example, t CO₂e per million EUR of revenue, per employee, per tonne of product or per MWh.
- Base year: the year you compare your progress with.
- Method: the standard used, for example the GHG Protocol or ISO 14064.
- Verification: a check of the data by an outside body.
- Company details: name, sector, country and size.
- Climate targets: reduction targets, the path to them and links to schemes such as the SBTi.
How does EXERGY help with OpenClimat reporting?
We have calculated corporate carbon footprints since 2017.
We work with companies from many sectors and prepare reports that meet the needs of OpenClimat and supply chain partners.
We work under the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064.
We sort data from the whole supply chain and get it ready for OpenClimat.
We prepare data in the OpenClimat format.
So your report is complete, clear and ready to publish on the platform without extra corrections.
We use our own emissions calculation tool.
It helps us prepare accurate reports in Scopes 1, 2 and 3, ready to publish in OpenClimat.
We help you set realistic reduction targets.
Based on your data, we set the direction of action and help you build a decarbonisation strategy in line with climate targets.
